1st Place Winner by Laura Grathwohl

A teenage boy had to work at the local discount store on Memorial Weekend.

So unfair he thought. I’ll miss the trip to the lake with my friend.

That means the only thing left for me to do

Is to go to the stupid family barbeque.

Sunday evening at work he found a change in the schedule and couldn’t believe his eyes.

He had to work in florals, what an unwelcomed surprise.

Grumbling and complaining all the way to the other side, He kicked at a shelf and let out a sigh.

”Excuse me dear boy. Could you do a good deed?

I’m in need of a cart and be obliged if you’d fetch one for me.”

The boy looked back to see an old man shuffling with an arm full of flowers.

Might as well the boy thought. It will help pass the time

And I still have eight long hours.

The boy brought the cart and turned to walk away

But the old man started talking and he couldn’t help but listen to what he had to say…

”The golden petals of this bunch here would have matched my sister’s curly hair.

Cancer took her away at the age of forty-one. Cancer is never, ever fair.

This white lily with the sparkling dews reminds me of meringues on Mama’s pies, The color of her hair and the sparkle in her eyes.

This bundle is perfect for my Dad…browns, greens and tans, Earth’s colors for he used to work the land.

Jason’s eyes would have matched this bright blue.

He was my baby brother who died when he was only two.

Mary, sweet Mary, was beautiful and dear.

She was a bouquet of spring like these right here.

For sixty years she was my life.

Oh, how I miss my best friend, my wife.

This year I have to get one more because I lost my grandson in this here war.

I think I’ll get this bundle of roses.

Red for the blood that is shed, white for the freedoms you and I pursue

And for all the tears that fall, this beautiful royal blue.

Thank you dear boy for getting me the cart

And for listening to what’s inside this old man’s heavy heart.

People don’t slow down enough to listen anymore,

Everyone is on the go, more and more.

I’d better get movin’ along,” he said with a grin.

“I hope you enjoy the rest of this long weekend.”

Quickly the boy asked, “Mister, do you have plans for tomorrow?”

“Nah,” the man said. “I’m just going to put out these flowers to help ease my sorrow.”

“Can I come along for the ride?

I’d like to hear more about your family and then I’d like to introduce you to mine.”

The old man’s eyes went misty, lips trembling he said,

“I’ll meet you in the parking lot at nine,

My new found friend.”

The boy wandered around still in a daze,

Went back down the aisle, putting flowers back in place.

Never before had he seen the true colors of Memorial Day.

Not until he stopped and listened to what the old man had to say.

The Jump

2nd Place Winner by Randall Beahan

In the still of a pond a trite fury is spawned.

One tasty morsel is spied then carefully eyed.

A lone bug on the surface, a famished fish given purpose.

Each movement linked as provoked by instinct.

An appearance of bubbles as activity doubles.

A showing of ripples, activity triples.

Momentary shaking, underwater quaking.

Prey capturing commotion, a minute explosion.

In a graceful arc silvery scales glisten.

A splashful re-entry, aquatic incision.

Diminishing waves in circular fashion.

Calm now invades this exiting action.

Mistaken

3rd Place Winner – Shadonica Williams

I thought I knew Love.. But was mistaken, to see it a mile away or when it drew close to me! I read all of the books, researched all of the movies my plan was tight!

But I was mistaken!

The plan was all wrong; I was not the hunter but the hunted Love had eluded me; I could not track it down. And then it happened, the voice the calmness…it was God!

“Be still!am looking for you, do not chase me for in time we shall be together. You need not prove to me what you seek for I already know. “

In my dream I see a shadow my reach goes unfulfilled, and I am disheartened and feel my defeat! But then you come to me and the joy that I feel is overwhelming.

My soul is encouraged as you show me previous encounters, the brief conversations and a momentary touch that in my haste I did not recognize. You were so patient, letting me run to and fro, falling, crying, and doubting wandering so lqst.

I look up with tear stained eyes to see it was you all along, out stretched arms, smiling ready to encourage my heart. How could I have missed you why did I not find? In my chasing of love I did not remember that LOVE must come through God

Through God I have found rea/love and through him I have found you, he has awakened

my soul and the fire burns bright…and now I know …

I am not mistaken!
